SPIRE projects on the utilisation of CO2 and CO

Summary

The first stakeholder event – SPIRE projects on the utilisation of CO2 and CO – has been organised on September 12th, 2018 and took place in Brussels. The event started with a welcome from Jürgen Tidje (European Commission - DG Research and Innovation) and an introduction from Alexis Bazzanella (DECHEMA). A total of seven EU funded projects, spearheaded by Carbon4PUR, have had the opportunity to present themselves and their goals. Particularly, the Carbon4PUR project has been jointly presented by Liv Adler (Covestro) and Geert Snellings (Recticel). The invited projects were FReSMe, MefCO2, ICO2CHEM, RECO2DE, ENGICON and EPOS. Beside the project presentation, a representative of ArcelorMittal gave a talk about “smart carbon pathways for steel industry waste gases”. Further, new “standardised guidelines for Life Cycle and Techno-Economic Assessment of CO2 utilisation” have been discussed. The day was concluded by a panel discussion about “cross-sectorial aspects of CO and CO2 utilisation” with Liv Adler (Covestro), Damien Dallemagne (CO2Value Europe), Dennis Krämer (DECHEMA), Angel Sánchez Díaz (Everis), Michiel Stork (ECOFYS) and Sophie Wilmet (CEFIC). The event was successful and counted 77 participants (25% industry) from 23 countries.

Details

As part of the EU Raw Materials Week, Carbon4PUR organised a stakeholder event to bring together SPIRE projects, industrial, political and NGO stakeholders in the area of CO2 and CO utilisation. The goal was to create synergies between the project, create a closer cooperation and have a holistic view on the field of CO2 and CO as raw materials. The following SPIRE and EU funded projects have presented their take on the subject and the advances in the projects:

  • Carbon4PUR - Turning industrial waste gases into valuable polyurethanes - European research collaboration between steel and chemical industry
  • FReSMe & MefCO2 - Methanol production from flue and residual steel gases
  • ICO2CHEM - From industrial CO2 streams to added value Fischer-Tropsch chemicals
  • RECO2DE & ENGICOIN - Recycling CO2 in the cement industry in production of added-value additives
  • EPOS - Enhanced energy and resource Efficiency and Performance in process industry Operations via onsite and cross-sectorial Symbiosis
  • Steelanol - Transforming carbon-rich industrial waste gases into advanced bio-ethanol

A special focus of the event was on geographical aspects of CO2 and CO as chemical feedstocks: where do we have CO2 and CO sources, where renewable energy and chemical transformation facilities? Do we need pipelines for the gases, is there space for the new utilisation plants?

A panel discussion allowed for interaction between all projects and the stakeholders. In this context, value chains and cooperations between the different actors have been also discussed and all participating projects were grateful for the feedback from the different stakeholders about their projects, depending on the progress of the project: Did the project consider all important aspects? Do you have suggestions for the implementation? Do you see problems?
Stakeholders were getting a thorough understanding of the research going on in Europe to use carbon rich gases as ressources could make their voice heard. The event was a great opportunity for networking and to get into contact with researchers and companies working in the field of CO2 and CO utilisation. Thank you for participating.
